10 Cleansing Tips for the Holiday Season

If you are going to get holiday this season …hey I know I am, and I am a naturopath!  We all know excess sugar, fatty food and alcohol can take its toll on your body, mind and spirit.

So here are 10 tips to hopefully help ease the pain… if you are going to drink, eat and play hard …so to speak.

1. Water - If you are going to be drinking alcohol in excess.  Remember to take your water bottle with you. – drink at least 1.5 to 2 Litres of filtered or spring water daily.  Consume  a few large glasses of water before you go out & 1 glass of water between alcoholic drinks.

2. Lemons & Limes – drink a large mug of warm water with juice of 1 small lemon or lime added to help wake up those digestive juices and get your liver working baby.  Grapefruit is a great Phase 2 liver detoxifier.  Be wary if you are taking any medication as it can decrease its effectiveness due to this.

3. Protein - If you can have some protein like eggs.  Alcohol depletes a number of amino acids in your body.  Replacing them with protein can help you totally restore your vibe. Good sources are; eggs, nuts and seeds, legumes, Hommos, tuna, sprouts, lean red and white meat.

4. Cleanse - When you have been over indulging on food & drink.  Stock up the fridge and eat more liver supporting foods at home; blueberries, raspberries, plumbs, cranberries, kiwis, dark leafy green salads, green beans to dip and bitter greens, chicory, rocket, dandelion leaf, broccoli, beetroot, kale chips, roasted Brussel sprouts and sprouted beans and legumes.

5. Sleep – Get some extra zzzz’s.  If you are partying till late try to have a sleep in.  If that is not possible have a snooze during the day.  Take a warm bath with magnesium, Epsom salts and lavender to help relax your muscles and frazzeled nervous system.  We rejuvenate our cells, loose weight and detox in our sleep!

6. When you know the food is going to be not quite great at the party.  Sometimes you just have this feeling its going to be spring rolls, party pies & not so great ‘Horses’ – ‘dervres’ aka Hors d'oeuvre.  I suggest having a big green salad with the protein of your choice  before you leave home.   See - Easy Lunches: at Love thy Health  Then at least you know you started the evening off to a good start.   If you are anything like me you will eat the party food too, maybe not so much.

7. Eat a cleansing veggie soup between dates.  Between dates eat a healthful bone broth or veggie soup.  Easy to make and stock up in the freezer.  Add turmeric, garlic, dandelion leaf from the garden.  See my soup, broth and congee recipes.

8. Organic Herbal Teas & Coffee – Take a cleansing herbal green tea which is full of antioxidant benefits or have a roasted dandelion root coffee to support your liver.

Other Cleansing herbal loose leaf teas; Burdock, Dandelion Root, Red Clover, Nettle, Liquorice, Lemon Verbena, Milk Thistle & Calendula

9. Be Kind to Yourself #2  Getting a massage or going to a steam  or sauna at the local pool doesn’t cost much except a little time.  This can help excrete toxins out of your body through your skin. – There are so many ways we can treat ourselves.

10. Be Kind to Yourself  #2 - Remember to be caring with yourself.  After a few hard nights here and there you may experience mood changes due to your energy being low.  Give yourself some time out in nature.

Just like you would treat a young child, take yourself to a park, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.  Take a picnic rug with you, lay under a tree and enjoy.

Enjoy some great time out!
